Katherine has lived many new chapters over the past six years, since ending her 24-year marriage to a fellow journalist and the father of her three children. She left her longtime job at the Tampa Bay Times, launched a public relations firm, battled with and beat colon cancer, started dating again, sent her last child off to college, taught journalism as an adjunct instructor at her alma mater, UNC-Chapel Hill, and returned to her home state of North Carolina after being away for 30 years. Additionally, she navigated a difficult time caring for her aging parents as an only child after the death of her sister, and said goodbye to the father, a longtime journalist, whom she adored and looked up to. Katherine is currently writing her next chapter in graduate school, working toward her master’s degree in journalism so she can teach on a college level.

Katherine Snow Smith is an esteemed journalist and the author of two collections of personal essays, which have both received high praise for their authenticity, humor and insight into valued self-improvement topics such as acceptance, life transitions, parenting, divorce, and ultimately how to stay true to yourself. Paired with her writing career, Katherine is a public speaker with experience giving talks focused on various aspects of empowerment. She has participated in several speaker series panels for various organizations, and spoken at large group events including university journalism departments, nonprofit fundraisers and literary events. She is a natural storyteller who easily brings people to laughter, and then has them wiping away tears a few minutes later.
Her message is this — for those who are entering the next chapter of their lives, know that this isn’t the final installment. It may be a short chapter, or a longer one. It may be good, or brutal. It may be a change that you bravely decide to make, or one that was forced upon you. Life is a series of chapters and you can decide how long each one is until you start another. This doesn’t make you a quitter to begin again, the ability to pivot and keep evolving makes you strong. You are the author of your own story. So, we listen to who we are and move forward, one chapter at a time.
